Nothing wrong with compressed loads, so just shoot what works best within recommended charges. (37,600 CUP) Would their be a problem …The 420 grain plain base from Lyman's #457193 cast of wheelweights has also done well using 31 grs. 4198 for a muzzle velocity of around 1325 fps. I haven't looked at the article in a long time, but Ken Waters did a lengthy .45-70 evaluation for PET LOADS and I think he also had good results using similar .45-70 loads.My Lee book doesn't list an IMR 4198 / 60gr sp load, my Hornady book (older edition) lists the max as 22.6gr, Steve's (usually liberal) lists the max at 22.0, and the IMR/Hogdon website shows the max load at 19.5 gr. To me, the difference in a max load of 19.5 (IMR) and 22.6 (Hornady) is pretty substantial, and I don't want to push the limits ...If you want to try using the IMR 4198 in your Model 1894 38-55, start with 22 grains, and make sure to check the velocity with a chronograph. You are looking for a load in the 1300 – 1600 fps range that provides consistent velocity and good accuracy. IMR 4198 is not position sensitive, so fillers are not necessary. I can't find any data for 4198 and 35gr bullets,and, as a novice reloader i have been reluctant to try it. It would save me buying another powder if i could use 4198 for all 3 calibers. IMR 4198 is a GREAT powder for the 223.. bullet weights of 65 grains and under.. if it isn't accurate in your gun ( I'm a bolt action guy).. its not the powder.. its your gun or the shooter...
